Kelty McKerracher
Kelty Jean McKerracher (she/they) is a queer settler, community-engaged artist, flamenco performer, and lawyer living on Coast Salish territories. She discovered flamenco at Vancouver’s Kino Café at the age of 18 and has been an aficionada ever since. Kelty studied baile with Oscar Nieto and Kasandra Lea of Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy and, like many, counts Oscar “El FM” as a cherished mentor. For seven years, Kelty led a flamenco dance troupe in the Downtown Eastside and produced Barrio Flamenco: Flamenco for the People for the DTES Heart of the City Festival.
Kelty holds a Master’s degree in Expressive Arts Therapy and a law degree focused on Indigenous legal orders. They continue to draw inspiration and courage from their flamenco practice, and recently spent 4 months studying cante at Fundación Cristina Heeren in Sevilla, Spain. Kelty recently collaborated on a Queer Flamenco project and aspires to sing country music.
